Digital Rosetta Stone

Projet réalisé dans le cadre d’un appel à projet pour The Wrong – Megalith
en octobre 2019 et exposé à Svalbard durant l’hiver 2019.

The Rosetta Stone is a granodiorite stele discovered in 1799 which is inscribed with three versions of a decree issued in Egypt in 196 BC. The top and middle texts are in Ancient Egyptian using hieroglyphic and demotic scripts, while the bottom is in Ancient Greek. The decree has only minor differences among the three versions, so the Rosetta Stone became key to deciphering Egyptian hieroglyphs, thereby opening a window into ancient Egyptian history. This Digital Rosetta Stone’s goal is to be a key of understanding of our modern langages for the future generations. Through the words of the French poet Guillaume Apollinaire, translated into the 8 most spoken modern languages, the future inhabitants of our planet will be able to access the written history of humankind. The poem, « Il pleut », known in English as « It’s raining », is both illustrated visually by the original calligram of the artist and musically by a recording of the rain to ensure a better understanding possible of the content.
